Frequently asked questions

How long will it take for my mini home to be ready?

Yes. In fact, this is the most common setup. WA law allows you to build an ancillary dwelling (secondary tiny home) on the same lot as your main house.

Your Savanna Pod House would be classified as an ancillary dwelling and can sit in your backyard without subdividing the land or removing it from your main property.

Requirements:

  • Must meet setback rules (distance from fence: typically 1–1.5m side/rear, 6m front in standard residential zones)
  • Must not exceed 70m² floor area (your 18m² pod easily qualifies)
  • Cannot be sold separately from the main property

This setup is perfect for home offices, granny flats, teenage retreats, or Airbnb rentals.

Can my pod house be on my property if I already have a main house?

Do I need planning permission for a mini house in Perth?

It depends on your council and how your pod is built.

Fixed pod houses (on a permanent foundation) up to 70m² are now exempt from planning approval in most Perth councils, including Joondalup. This is thanks to recent changes to WA's Residential Design Codes (effective April 2024).

Both our Savanna Pod and Savanna Lux Pod are under 70m² — so if either is built on a fixed foundation and meets setback requirements (1–1.5m from side/rear boundaries), no DA (Development Application) is needed.

👉 Tip: Contact your local council to confirm your specific property is approved. Most Perth metro councils now have streamlined policies.

Do i need a building permit for a Perth Mini House?

Yes for those that are fixed however if they have wheels (like a caravan) no building permit is required. You council may have restrictions on the length of stays.

Can I customise the mini houses?

Yes you have a choice of colours for the walls, cabinets and floors.
