Straight answers to the questions we're asked most about pod houses and backyard tiny homes in Perth: approvals, delivery, power, plumbing and what's included.
Approvals
Do I need council approval for a pod house in WA?
Most of our customers set the Savanna Pod up on a registered trailer (sold separately), which means it's treated as a tiny home on wheels rather than a building. There's no building permit or engineering certification involved. You apply to your local council for a temporary accommodation approval, which can be granted for up to two years at a time and renewed.
You may have heard that granny flats under 70m² don't need planning approval in WA. That's true for permanent, fixed dwellings, but they still need a full building permit and NCC certification. Our pods aren't built to the NCC, so they're designed for the trailer route instead.
The larger Savanna Pod Lux is too heavy for a standard trailer, so check with your council or a registered building surveyor about the approvals it would need on your site. Any approvals for your site are your responsibility as the owner, and we can provide the specs, photos and test reports your council asks for.
Do the pods meet Australian building standards?
Our pods are not certified to the National Construction Code (NCC). The electrical fit-out is to Australian standards (AS/NZS) with Australian outlets, plumbing fixtures and fittings are WaterMark certified and WELS rated, and materials are tested asbestos-free by a NATA-accredited Australian laboratory. Because they aren't NCC certified, they're not suited to being fixed permanently to the ground as a dwelling without further works and certification.
Can I rent my pod out or list it for short stays?
Paid accommodation usually needs its own approvals beyond a standard temporary accommodation approval, and WA's short-term rental registration may also apply. Speak to your council about your plans before listing.
Ordering & delivery
How long does it take from order to delivery?
Typically 20–24 weeks in total: 1–2 weeks for order confirmation and finish selection, around 6–7 weeks in production, 10–12 weeks shipping to Fremantle including customs clearance, then 1–2 weeks for delivery and connection. See our full process and timeline.
Can I choose my own colours and finishes?
Yes. You select your wall panels, kitchen cabinetry and flooring from our curated ranges, and we send you a rendered preview of your exact colour combination before anything goes into production.
How does the pod get into my backyard?
Pods arrive fully assembled and are positioned by crane or truck. We coordinate placement to suit your site, through our transport and crane contacts or a contractor of your choice. Access (gate width, overhead lines, placement) is confirmed during your initial site check so there are no surprises on delivery day.
What site preparation do I need?
Your pod needs a level, stable spot and clear access for delivery. Exact requirements vary with your site, so we confirm this during your site check before you order.
The pod itself
What's included in a pod house?
A complete kitchen with silica-free stone benchtop, full bathroom, double-glazed windows with fly screens, insulated steel-frame construction, and finished walls, flooring and cabinetry in your chosen colours, all built before it arrives.
How is the pod powered?
The pod is fully wired with a single inbound power connection, which keeps hook-up simple. Connection to your property's supply must be done by a licensed electrician. The electrical fit-out is to Australian standards (AS/NZS) with Australian outlets.
What about water and plumbing?
A licensed plumber connects water and drainage after placement. Plumbing fixtures and fittings are WaterMark certified and WELS rated, and hot water pipework comes pre-installed, so your plumber simply fits a locally sourced hot water unit during connection.
Does the pod come with air conditioning?
Air conditioning is installed after delivery. Your pod arrives pre-wired for a split system, so a local installer can fit the unit of your choice once the pod is in place.
Does the pod come with a hot water system?
The hot water unit is installed after delivery. All hot water pipework to the shower and kitchen is pre-installed with space reserved for the unit, so your plumber fits a locally sourced system during connection. Sourcing it locally means a full Australian warranty and easy servicing.
What warranty do the pods come with?
Both pods come with a 1 year manufacturing warranty, on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
What can I use a pod for?
Our customers use pods as guest accommodation, space for family, home offices and studios, and teenage retreats. Every pod is self-contained with its own kitchen and bathroom.
